ACPM Statement on Meeting of CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices

In response to the outcomes of the September meeting of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) releases the following statement:

(Washington, D.C.) In the realm of disease prevention and health promotion, ensuring every American receives accurate and evidence-based vaccine guidance is critical. The public, the healthcare community and the insurance industry look to ACIP for clear recommendations. Recent actions and supporting discussions surrounding vaccines have raised questions on the best guidance for preventing illness and disease, making it difficult for the public to make informed decisions as the fall respiratory illness season approaches. ACPM recognizes and emphasizes the importance of clarity in medical guidance.

Preventive medicine physicians are trained to monitor and ensure safety and efficacy in public health interventions and serve as trustworthy stewards of the public’s health. It is crucial to use science-backed, evidence-based approaches, and to provide the resources and infrastructure necessary to protect the public’s health and ensure our national security.  ACPM continues to emphasize the need for qualified, clinical and population-health expertise in maintaining and navigating the complexities of immunization recommendations.

ACPM is steadfastly committed to providing vaccine guidance to the public based on proven safety and efficacy, and to ensuring individuals have sufficient information on benefits and risks to make informed decisions about vaccines for themselves and their families.
