In 2025, the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) undertook a comprehensive effort to strengthen the foundational elements of the organization and position the College for a sustainable future. ACPM advanced disciplined cost optimization initiatives to improve efficiency and ensure resources were directed where they deliver the greatest impact to members. These efforts were complemented by the planning of new business lines, including the launch of ACPM Advisory, LLC (Advisory), a professional services subsidiary of the College, and the development of ACPM Executive Search, a new service dedicated to executive recruitment and placement of members. Drawing on the expertise of ACPM members, Advisory will work collaboratively with federal health agency partners to design, evaluate and scale evidence-based solutions that advance prevention, strengthen health systems and improve lives nationwide.

While conducting forward-looking initiatives, ACPM also took steps to recognize the accomplishments of the College over 70 years of leadership in medicine and public health. ACPM President Dr. Ryung Suh established the Past Presidents Council, engaging former leaders for mentorship, strategic counsel and development. Through extensive member interviews and record review, ACPM published Moments & Momentum – 70 Years of Proven Prevention: Leadership for Tomorrow — narrating the evolution of the American health system through foundational milestones of ACPM members and the specialty of preventive medicine to bring innovation, resilience and prevention-forward thinking to the health sector.

Through ACPM’s initiatives over the year, the College implemented new member value opportunities, advocated for the specialty of public health and general preventive medicine, and moved forward ACPM’s mission of creating healthier communities and transforming our healthcare system into one that values disease prevention and health promotion.

Driving Medicine and Public Health Forward

ACPM established comprehensive curricula in 2025, offering a Certification in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Preventive Medicine & Public Health, which provides foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and apply AI responsibly in healthcare and public health settings. ACPM also published a series of Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response webinars, which covers a range of critical topics designed to aid planning and response to public health emergencies. Recently, ACPM also launched a series of webinars on Surveillance Systems and Environmental Health that will continue into spring 2026.

Partnership to Prevent Injury and Chronic Disease

In partnership with the Association for State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) through a cooperative agreement with the CDC, ACPM continued grant-funded work to derive and disseminate best practices in hypertension management among disproportionately impacted populations. ACPM members served as both writers and peer-reviewers alongside the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and other medical specialty societies to provide updated guidelines for the prevention, detection, evaluation and management of high blood pressure in adults.

ACPM partnered with the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (Injury Center) to improve effective and timely integration of fall prevention screening into clinical care. Building on the CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) initiative, ACPM published a falls prevention toolkit and two-page infographic tool, “Take Five for Fall Prevention” as well as an accompanying webinar to provide clear clinical and practical guidance in the first 5 minutes of a clinic visit to reduce falls in patients aged 65 and older.

Building the Future of the Specialty

Member Sections

ACPM’s revitalized Member Sections have continued to grow and spur engagement among the next generation of preventive medicine physicians, with ongoing programming slated to continue into 2026. The Medical Student Section (MSS) hosted regular discussions with Preventive Medicine Residency Program Directors from around the country, giving those interested in the specialty the chance to learn about the unique opportunities offered by preventive medicine. The Resident Physician Section (RPS) launched its monthly Career Pathways series, bringing residents together with preventive medicine leaders, ACPM Board Members and Past Presidents for in-depth conversations about their diverse career journeys within the specialty. The Early Career Physicians Section (ECPS) launched their focus on raising visibility of the specialty among provider recruitment associations, streamlining credentialing processes and building comprehensive career development support.

Special Interest Groups

ACPM convened Special Interest Groups (SIGs), bringing together members from across sectors – including academia, industry and others – around a common purpose while advising, networking and mentoring colleagues to increase opportunities for engagement and advancement in respective fields. Four SIGs – Climate and Health, Global Health, Pharmaceutical Medicine and Artificial Intelligence and Public Health – are currently active.

Supporting the Future of the Specialty

ACPM hosted rising medical professionals, through fellowship opportunities and policy rotations, to support the next generation of physician leaders. Rotations allowed for medical students to build infographics and informational tools highlighting promising practices in preventing chronic disease, screening for fall prevention within clinical settings and support the development of a virtual panel discussion on advancing HIV prevention. A twelve-week resident rotation included the development of a CME webinar on Global Health and contributions toward ACPM’s advocacy initiatives and policy development.

Notably, 2025 was the first year that preventive medicine specialties were included in the National Resident Matching Program. Additionally, in response to changes in the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) exam content outlines, ACPM updated its In-Service Examination (ISE), as volunteer exam writers convened to provide specialty questions across all three preventive medicine specialties. ACPM President Dr. Ryung Suh delivered remarks at the ACPM 2025 PMR Graduation Ceremony, convening more than a hundred graduates across nearly 40 programs.

Advocating for Prevention and Public Health

In 2025, the Trump-Vance administration and 119th Congress brought sweeping changes to the federal healthcare landscape. ACPM shared and published recommendations to enact public health and preventive medicine priorities, while fostering relationships and building visibility for the specialty of preventive medicine. ACPM, through letters, testimony and public comment, weighed in on issues surrounding the safety and efficacy of vaccines, coding and reimbursement of preventive services, the benefits of sustaining the preventive medicine workforce and more.

ACPM members from around the country engaged policymakers through ACPM’s Action Center, and participated in virtual and in-person Capitol Hill visits to continue to advocate for the specialty of preventive medicine. ACPM members sent a record number of messages on issues pertaining to sustaining the Preventive Medicine pathways supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration. When funding distribution for preventive medicine residency programs was rumored to be in question, ACPM successfully ensured programs receiving HRSA grant funding for graduate medical education were not interrupted.

Meetings and Events

PM2025 brought nearly 500 attendees to Seattle, dedicated to “Moving the Needle for Preventive Medicine and Public Health.” Attendees had the opportunity to attend skill-building and media literacy workshops, as well as ACPM townhalls and lightning session discussions on timely public health and prevention-focused issues.

Dr. Leith States, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPM, former HHS Acting Assistant Secretary for Health, delivered the keynote Katharine Boucot Sturgis Lecture for the opening plenary session and Dr. Matthew Boulton, MD, MPH, FACPM, Sr. Associate Dean at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, was awarded the ACPM Board of Regents Scientific Excellence award. At PM2025, ACPM offered four scholarships to medical students through the Future Leaders in Preventive Medicine program, fully supported by the generous donations of members, and two resident scholarships provided through the Jacob and Heather Adams Scholarship fund.

Dr. Daniel S. Blumenthal Award and Lecture

ACPM continued the tradition of honoring former ACPM President Dr. Daniel S. Blumenthal’s legacy in its fifth award and lecture. In 2025, four individuals were recognized for their efforts to improve rural health. Participants and representatives joined in a lively discussion surrounding the future of rural health in the United States, and where prevention can be most effective in providing care to under-served populations.

The awardees were: Tom Morris, MPA, Associate Administrator, HRSA Office of Rural Health Policy; Peter Kaboli, MD, MS, Executive Director, VHA Office of Rural Health; Hilda Heady, MSW, Past President, National Rural Health Association; and Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President and CEO, National Association of Community Health Centers.

Publications and Media

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) and AJPM Focus, having been acquired by long-term publisher Elsevier in 2024, continued to serve as the scientific journals of both ACPM and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR).

In 2025, under the guidance of the Science and Translation Committee, the College published the ACPM Position Statement, Screening for Health-Related Social Needs: American College of Preventive Medicine’s Practice Statement. ACPM, in partnership with the American Medical Association, published a Diabetes Prevention Cascade Model and Executive Summary for reducing diabetes prevalence in Black and Hispanic women. In addition to the scientific contributions published in the journals, ACPM continues to publish ACPM News and Content, including Member Spotlights, Presidential addresses, Fellow and Award announcements and more to amplify the work of ACPM members. Members continued to serve as experts to prominent media outlets, offering insights and preventive medicine perspectives on emerging health topics.

LOOKING AHEAD

ACPM took decisive and strategic cost-cutting measures over 2025 to ensure the long-term financial stability of the College. With new business lines coming into focus – launching ACPM Advisory and ACPM Executive Search – the College is poised to leverage new ventures to aid in modernizing your professional home.

ACPM will review and renew the College’s Strategic Plan, centering on capacity building to protect and grow the specialty of preventive medicine, with a clear commitment to building meaningful member value. Along with a renewed Strategic Plan, ACPM will revisit committee governance structures and ensure member-based administration and oversight of the College’s activities are well maintained to continue moving forward initiatives. ACPM will pilot an enhanced education subscription model for unlimited CME to the existing PrevEd offerings, providing a membership add-on for access to all basic online educational offerings, for a low, fixed cost.

Members will convene May 14-17 for PM2026 in Baltimore, Maryland, meeting to “Secure the Future of Preventive Medicine and Public Health,” a unique opportunity to enhance the visibility and positions of PM physicians. Additionally, ACPM will publish a strategic framework proposing a comprehensive list of proposals for key reforms to workforce development, health system infrastructure, incentive structures and more, aimed at driving measurable improvements in population health outcomes with prevention embedded at the heart of the American health system.

Thank you to our members and partners for continuing to navigate winding pathways with ACPM – as we enter the next year more resilient, more agile and confident in our steps forward to improve the health and well-being for all.
