Aerospace Medicine is an ACGME-accredited specialty within Preventive Medicine focused on the health and safety of pilots, astronauts, flight crews, and passengers. Physicians in this field address the physiologic challenges of flight and space travel—“normal physiology in abnormal conditions.”
There are six civilian programs (Mayo Clinic, UCLA, UTMB Galveston, UT Houston, Baylor–MGH, University of Arizona) and three military programs (Air Force, Navy, Army). Most are 2-year programs, often combined with an MPH, and include rotations with NASA, FAA, SpaceX, and other partners. Graduates are eligible for board certification in Aerospace Medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).
