(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Upon release of the FY 2027 President’s Budget Request, including budget proposals for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Administration for a Healthy America (AHA), the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) urges Congress to meet the demands to prioritize prevention by funding physician training in the ABMS-recognized specialty of Preventive Medicine. The proposed elimination of the HRSA Preventive Medicine Residency Program would essentially decimate the single greatest source of federal funding designed to ensure the physician workforce is knowledgeable in chronic disease prevention and wellness promotion.
ACPM shares the Administration’s goals of transforming our health system to prioritize prevention, however ACPM is alarmed at the proposal to eliminate federal funding support for accredited, post-graduate medical education in Preventive Medicine, which would undoubtedly undermine that outcome. To address the chronic disease crisis and reduce inefficiencies in healthcare, ACPM calls on Congress and the Administration to boldly elevate prevention-oriented medical education and increase targeted funding for Preventive Medicine Residency Programs nationwide. Making America Healthy Again begins with a physician workforce trained and certified in Preventive Medicine.
