Membership Organizations Need an Engaged Membership

We all view ACPM as our medical professional home, and as our professional medical specialty society, which is true, but at our core, we are a membership organization.  We exist because of our members, for our members, and in order to foster and promote the work of our members in advancing health.  Though our organization is not particularly large, we are fortunate to have a highly talented, enthusiastic and engaged membership.  There are many ways to measure the health of an organization such as ACPM — name recognition, financial stability, political influence and journal impact factor to name just a few.

I have always believed that one of the best and most organic ways to measure the health of an organization is the engagement of its membership, where we have traditionally been especially strong.  To that end, I would like to take the opportunity in this newsletter article to remind and encourage everyone to participate in some of the most fundamental elements of organizational engagement.

For example, we are presently holding elections for officers and board members.  The College has a very competitive ballot of remarkable candidates, with at least two great candidates for every open position on the Board.  I would encourage everyone to take a moment to vote, which is something that everyone “intends” to do, but we sometimes forget to follow through.  Eligible members were sent an election ballot via email on August 15 and will be receiving a reminder email today as well.  Please also take a moment to review the candidate bios, engage with the candidates on ACPM Pulse and participate in this vital function of the College.

Our periodic member surveys are another example of a simple yet often overlooked mechanism for membership engagement.  These sometimes fall victim to email fatigue or are avoided for fear of being too time consuming.  These surveys provide an incredibly valuable voice for our membership to communicate to the Board, as well as to our many committees.  Please take a moment to complete the most recent survey, if you have not already done so.
