(WASHINGTON, D.C.) The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) recognizes the recently announced slate of members appointed to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). ACPM is encouraged that the important work of the Task Force will continue, since Preventive Medicine physicians played a pivotal role in its development. While the Task Force’s new members are untraditional from its historical composition — many with training in treatment-oriented specialties — ACPM underscores the importance of a credible, prevention-oriented panel reviewing evidence and providing unbiased recommendations to improve delivery and practice of preventive services, and maintaining a strong voice for Primary Care and Preventive Medicine.
ACPM has repeatedly called for the USPSTF continue its work in an uninterrupted manner and is disappointed that the newly appointed members do not include board-certified Preventive Medicine physicians. ACPM urges that appropriate safeguards be put into place to ensure evidence-based, prevention-focused recommendations prevail to the benefit of the American people. It is crucial to uphold the principles championed by Preventive Medicine in the decision-making processes of USPSTF.
