(WASHINGTON, D.C.) The American College of Preventive Medicine is deeply saddened by the passing of public health giant and former CDC Director William Foege. Dr. Foege played a pivotal role in the eradication of smallpox, and he served as both a role model and mentor for generations of public health leaders.
Dr. Foege’s contributions and leadership in public health — recognized by ACPM through the Katharine Boucot Sturgis (KBS) Award and delivery of the KBS Lecture at Preventive Medicine 2012 — are a true demonstration of the power of preventive medicine and collective need for collaboration in global health to prevent disease and promote wellness. His legacy will endure in the countless lives he has saved, and the lessons he has imparted to both current and future generations of public health professionals.
