Record numbers of members have become Fellows in the last few years, everyone from young physicians to folks who have been around awhile. Now is your chance to join them, but this year’s application deadline for becoming a Fellow of the College is fast-approaching. You have until September 1 to submit your application packet.
Why should you become a Fellow of the College?
I couldn’t wait to be a Fellow and applied as soon as I had enough points to earn the designation (more on that later). Not only does fellowship in the college get you more letters after your name, but also demonstrates your commitment and contribution to our specialty, allows you to serve as a member of the Board of Regents, grants you access to special events at our annual conference and earns you recognition at both the conference and on the College’s multiple platforms – even in this article (see below).
What do I have to do to become a Fellow?
All of the instructions are on the ACPM website here, but in summary in addition to the three years of full membership, you need to have a current board certification in preventive medicine or another ABMS recognized board, show evidence of active participation in ACPM (e.g., attend the annual conference in the last three years, participate on a committee, engage in advocacy activities or serve as representative to another organization) and you need to demonstrate contributions to the field of preventive medicine (e.g., teach preventive medicine, present on a prev med topic, develop or implement a prevention or quality program). For each activity you receive points, and you need 135 points to earn fellowship. You also will need two letters of recommendation from two current Fellows — so network and talk to your friends and if they aren’t Fellows yet get them to apply with you.
What if I don’t qualify to be a Fellow this year?
No worries, you can apply next year. But check out the steps here, so you are ready as soon as the application cycle opens again.
