Dr. Armstrong is the Director of Aerospace Medicine for
the Department of the Navy. He coordinates the
development and ongoing review of aerospace medicine
policy; advises the Chief of Naval Operations and the
Commandant of the Marine Corps on matters pertaining to
aeromedical recruiting, training and staffing; aviation
safety; physical standards; and disposition of
aeronautically designated personnel. He represents the
Navy on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) working
groups and panels, and he serves as an assistant professor
of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of the College of William and
Mary in Virginia (B.S., M.A.Ed.), the Eastern Virginia
Medical School (M.D.), and the School of Public Health and
Tropical Medicine at the Tulane University of Louisiana
(M.P.H. in Health Systems Management). He is certified by
the American Board of Preventive Medicine in both
Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Medicine. He is a
naval flight surgeon and a Federal Aviation Administration
aviation medical examiner.
A
fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Dr.
Armstrong has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal
with two Gold Stars, the Joint Service Commendation Medal,
the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold
Star, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the
Air Force Achievement Medal. In addition, he is the
recipient of the Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Alumni
Award.
